Grants for Relocation

Australian state governments offer quite a few relocation grants to encourage businesses and individuals willing to relocate or start their branches in their respective states. While most of these grants are aimed at developing various regional areas and to create job opportunities for the locals, others are aimed at attracting skilled workers and diversified businesses to their states. In this section, we will discuss about some of the relocation grants and their eligibility criteria.

One of the grants provided by an Australian state government provides businesses and workers willing to relocate to the regional areas of the state with a grant of up to $10,000. This grant is a part of the attraction program that highlights the benefits of living and working in regional area of the state. It mainly intends to attract skilled workers from the metropolitan areas to the regional areas. With a total of $2.5 million pool, 250 grants are made available every year. This is an ongoing program and to be able to apply for this grant:

Businesses must:

  • be operating in a regional area and in an eligible industry
  • be relocating to, or setting up in, regional areas of the state offering the grant and creating at least five ongoing full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in a regional local community
  • be already operating in regional areas of the state and seeking to recruit eligible workers

Workers must:

  • be relocating from metro regions that are at least 50km away from the regional area they are willing to relocate to
  • be working in the eligible industry
  • be Australian citizens or Permanent Residents on the date they start working

Regional Relocation Grants

Another state government grant available for SMEs willing to relocate to the regional areas of the state, funds up to $10,000 for workers and up to $20,000 to businesses. This program aims to create new jobs and investment in regional areas by offering relocation assistance and financial incentives. Its objective is to make it easier for businesses to establish or expand in the regional areas of the state. To be eligible for this grant:


  • must be willing to relocate to an eligible regional area or, if they are already operating in a listed regional area, they should be willing to expand their business creating new employment opportunities for the locals
  • must be operating in eligible industries and creating or retaining jobs in Special Activation Precincts
  • must be willing to meet the costs of relocation of the employees

One more state government funded grant, provides financial incentives to business that are willing to relocate, start-ups within the state and business willing to create new full-time job opportunities within the state. A total funding pool of $150 million is available each year for eligible businesses. The main aim behind this grant is to encourage the relocation and establishment of new projects, or reinvestment and expansion of existing operations of businesses within the state. To be eligible, businesses must:

  • be willing to relocate, start or expand their businesses in the state offering the grant
  • be operating in the industries prioritised by the state. Some of them include but are not limited to: Advanced manufacturing, Aerospace, Biofutures, Biomedical, Defence, Mining equipment, technology and services (METS)
  • undertake projects that are contestable
  • undertake projects which will be commercially viable when there are no incentives offered
