Western Australia government understands the crucial importance of small businesses in giving a boost to the economy of the state. Covid-19 pandemic and the shutdowns and restrictions imposed by the government have ravaged these small businesses. Realizing their plight, the government of WA as well as Perth City Council has announced a slew of measures to help small business owners.
Council’s Covid-19 Grants and Sponsorship Program
This program has been initiated by Perth City Council to lessen the impact of Covid-19 and to help small businesses in their effort to survive, rebuild, and grow. The program also aims to give a boost to tourism in Perth. There are three different kinds of business grants announced under this program.
Small Business Grants Perth
Small business quick response grants: As the name suggests, these are on off grants for small businesses of Perth that have been badly impacted by Covid-19 pandemic. A monetary assistance of up to $5,000 is available to eligible businesses under this grant.
Eligibility requirements
- Your business must be in the city of Perth
- It must have ABN
- It must have fewer than 20 employees
- The annual turnover of business should not be more than $10 million
This grant commenced on 29 July 2020 and it is open till 30 June 2021 or till the time when funds get exhausted.
Business improvement grants
These grants are a part of Covid-19 Grants and Sponsorship Program and they aim to stimulate the already established or new business activity in the city. There are actually two types of business improvement grants. First are grants up to $10,000 without the requirement of matched funding from the beneficiary. The other is grants up to $20,000 with matched funding from the eligible business of the city.
Eligibility requirements
- Business must be operating in Perth
- It must have ABN
- Annual turnover should not exceed $10 million
- It must be registered under GST

Economic Development Sponsorship
Economic Development Sponsorship aims to help businesses of Perth so that they can give a strong performance economically. It also aims to establish Perth as a hub for business and commerce. Funding under this program is provided to projects that support skill development and help in boosting economic development of Perth in key sectors of economy. This program commenced on 29 July 2020 and is supposed to close on 30 June 2021. Eligible businesses can apply in upwards of $4,000 but maximum contribution by the City of Perth cannot exceed 50% of the total cost of the event or the initiative.
New Business Assistance
If you have a new business idea but do not know how to implement this idea in reality, New Business Assistance from NEIS may be the best option for you. You can get the necessary training and also the financial assistance to start your new business in the city of Perth. Apart from training and mentoring, NEIS allowance for up to 39 weeks and rental assistance for up to 26 weeks is given in this program.
